Rough Hewn Mantels 1000’s of sizes available
Description of Custom Rough Hewn Mantels
The Custom Rough Hewn mantel has an attractive, naturalistic texture that includes pronounced lines, elegant ridges, and deep grooves. Molded from real wood that has been axed and split to give it its particularly rustic look, this mantel will make for a gorgeous addition to a fireplace design, and easily upgrade the ambiance of any room.
The mantels are made of high-density polyurethane, and don’t crack, chip, or deteriorate like real wood can. They also resist wood-damaging insects, like termites. Thus, they will last much longer than a real wood mantel, and maintain a charming look throughout the years. These mantels also weigh a fraction of real wood. Thanks to this, they won’t require added support to keep them on your wall. Very easy to install, they make for a fun weekend project.
The variety of color and sizing options also gives you the benefit of getting the mantel that’s perfect for your design. Even better, these don’t have the high cost normally associated with custom mantels. The range of color choices go beautifully with any décor. You can also choose the Unfinished option, and paint or stain the mantel to your liking.
Custom Rough Hewn mantels match our Rough Hewn beams, allowing you to accomplish a consistent design. Add rustic charm and character to your fireplace area, and get a whole new look for your living room, den, bedroom and more.
Note: Our faux mantels are durable but are for decorative use only. The mantels are not meant to support heavy weight. Due to our fireplace mantels being handmade, measurements may vary slightly.
Note: The Custom Rough Hewn Mantels may have screws embedded below the surface. We recommend using a hand saw (not power tools) when cutting these beams. You may find these screws with a stud finder. Barron Designs is not responsible for any bodily harm or damage to your equipment.

Selected an unfinished Rough Hewn Mantel that was 6 ft. by 10 inches wide and 6-1/2 inches high. This was a perfect proportion and dimension for over the fireplace.
A feature concerning placement and finish-side up, that is not explained on the website, is that you can use either the top or bottom side of the beam depending on which look you like best. I preferred the one end with its circular tree rings and 'checks' to be visible on the right side of my fireplace, so that flipped the beam for me.
I used a Minwax Gel Glaze purchased at a True Value Ace Hardware to finish the mantel-piece in two coats of Chestnut. Because the unfinished faux wood polystyrene comes in a light base color, I used two coats of the gel glaze and made it my preferred finish in dark brown. It came out excellent although the glaze is very glossy, so I over-sprayed it with a Rustoleum Matte finish (Home Depot) and it came out beautifully.
Also purchased two corbels to attach under the mantel and they look great, although I wish that the grain pattern could be altered to be different for the two different corbels. I was only able to order the same product number for each corbel. They could reverse or change the grain for better realism, but it is not really that noticeable once stained and installed. The corbels are not attached to the wall, as I chose to attach them to the bottom of the mantel with screws, so they look like they are holding it up.
I did not select the fire-resistive feature, as the mantel is installed more than 12 inches above the fireplace (CBC) opening and direct radiant heat will not affect it or melt the material.
Marked 'Average' installation because I had to mount the 2 x 4 on Petrified wood (that looks like stone) and needed to brick-chisel some of the material flat to accommodate the 2 x 4 support. Drilling into masonry is never 'easy' and any installation into masonry requires anchors to hold it on. The weight of the faux beam is insignificant (it's very light material) and only a few screws are needed to secure it to the 2 x 4.
I did install a wood block for a brace in the center inside the beam for support so it wouldn't sag in the middle.
Overall, beautiful, if not somewhat pricey product.

We love our new Mantel, it really helped set off our remodeled fireplace and great room. Everybody raves about and they can't believe it's not a real timber
Was easy to install, product was nice, dementions where perfect, and looks great !!!!!!!
We were very excited to install our new mantel above our pellet stove. The texture and quality of this mental is excellent and we are very satisfied of the look and how easy it was to install. I would recommend to anybody looking to purchase a mentel to go this way. There is very little maintenance involved and looks like a real beam! We love our Faux mantel.
This mantel was installed on a very uneven limestone rock fireplace. Basically, after removing the old mantel and setting the faux wood mantel on the existing supports I had gaps of almost an inch.
Based on your design of a hollow center and and easy to cut material I was able to scribe and cope both the top and bottom of the mantel to get a very tight professional looking install. It took a lot of time and patience, but was a fun and challenging project. I have no idea how I would have done this with a traditional solid wood beam!
The mantel is now ready for some decorating but that now is my wife's mission!!
Great product!! Thanks!
