Real Wood Rafter Tails

Each Real Wood Rafter Tail is made with selected high quality kiln-dried wood fiber, and is supplied pre-profiled and pre-primed in white. They deliver notably better performance than solid-sawn (conventional) rafter tails, with similar economics. This means that there are significantly fewer defects and cracking, without a cost increase. Utilizing two-thirds less wood fiber than conventional rafter tails, and requiring considerably less effort to install means Real Wood Rafter Tails are not only framer friendly, but also environmentally superior.

Economic Advantages

Our Real Wood Rafter Tails use 70% less wood than that of conventional solid sawn rafter tails. This means that even though Real Wood Rafter Tails are manufactured using significantly higher quality materials, the costs are not dramatically different.

Most framers and installers have reported that Real Wood Rafter Tails are a pleasure to work with and because they are much shorter and lighter — safer than conventional solid sawn rafter tails. They can be held in place and power nailed by one person. With Real Wood Rafter Tails being pre-primed, the costs for site priming are eliminated. Real Wood Rafter Tails are of consistently high quality. Sorting and culling are eliminated. In most cases Real Wood Rafter Tails will eliminate the need for costly elevated heels on roof trusses, saving 6%—12% on the cost of roof trusses. Real Wood Rafter Tails are guaranteed against delamination and since moisture fluctuations in the product are controlled, site caulking or callbacks to cracks or shrinkage can be reduced. In the unlikely event that a Real Wood Rafter Tail needs to be replaced the process is simple and inexpensive.

Environmental Advantages

Real Wood Rafter Tails require two-thirds less wood than conventional solid sawn rafter tails and can be manufactured with wood from smaller, faster growing trees that are found in renewable second growth forests. Unlike foam, Real Wood Rafter Tails' primary manufacturing component is not hydrocarbon based.

Quality & Appearance Advantages

The manufacturing of Real Wood Rafter Tails is closely monitored through strict quality control procedures. This means that each Real Wood Rafter Tail has a consistent high quality, appearance and finish. Real Wood Rafter Tails are manufactured using only meticulously selected kiln-dried glue laminated timber. Each Real Wood Rafter Tail is then permanently sealed on all surfaces with high grade exterior latex primer. This eliminates the moisture fluctuations in wood that causes the inevitable shrinkage, cracking, and checking that is often apparent in solid sawn conventional rafter tails. Real Wood Rafter Tails are also supplied uniformly rough sawn and precision profiled to meet the high standards of today's home buyer.
